What does a solar charge controller dor?
Simply put, the functions of a solar controller can be divided into:
- 1. Power regulation function;
- 2. Communication function: 1. Simple indication function 2. Protocol communication function such as RS485 Ethernet, wireless and other forms of background management;
- 3. Complete protection function: electrical protection reverse connection, short circuit, overcurrent, etc.
Solar controllers are mainly used in solar off-grid power generation systems. They can automatically control the equipment for charging batteries with multiple solar panels, coordinate the work of solar panels, batteries, and loads, and improve the charging efficiency of solar panels for batteries. Currently, there are two main types of PWM solar controllers and MPPT solar controllers on the market.

PWM solar controller
PWM, or pulse width modulation, refers to the use of the digital output of a microprocessor to control analog circuits. It is a method of digitally encoding analog signal levels. Digitally controlling analog circuits can greatly reduce system costs and power consumption.
The electrical structure of a PWM solar controller is relatively simple. It is mainly composed of a power main switch, a capacitor, a driver, and a protection circuit. It is actually equivalent to a switch. Connecting the components and batteries together, the voltage of the components will be pulled down to a voltage close to that of the battery pack.
MPPT solar controller
MPPT solar controller is more complicated and more expensive. The price is usually several times or even dozens of times that of PWM solar controller. MPPT solar controller can adjust the input voltage so as to obtain the maximum energy from the solar panel. MPPT controller can detect the power generation voltage of the solar panel in real time and track the maximum voltage and current value (VI) so that the system can charge the battery with maximum power output.
Compared with PWM solar controller, MPPT solar controller has maximum power tracking function, which can ensure that the solar panel always outputs at maximum power during charging and will not be affected by temperature. In terms of charging efficiency, it is naturally higher than PWM. In addition, PWM solar controller can only be used with related voltages. For example, 12V system panels can only be used with 12V controllers and batteries. It is suitable for some small off-grid systems below 2kw. It has a simple structure, convenient user wiring, and is relatively cheap.
The MPPT solar controller has a wider range of applications. Generally speaking, the solar panel voltage can be used between 12V-170V, and the battery voltage is adjustable from 12-96V. It has stronger applicability and is suitable for large off-grid power generation systems above 2kw. It has high efficiency and flexible component configuration.

129kWh BESS Cabinet: Complete Guide to Capacity, Components, Applications and Sizing
One of the first questions homeowners ask when considering solar storage or backup power is: How many batteries to run a whole house? It sounds like a simple question, but the answer is different for every home. A battery system that works well for a small house with basic backup needs may not be enough for a larger property running air conditioning, electric heating, or an EV charger.

A typical 129kWh BESS cabinet contains much more than battery cells. Inside the enclosure, multiple systems work together, including battery modules, Battery Management System (BMS), high-voltage protection units, Energy Management System (EMS), cooling equipment, fire protection devices, and communication components. Each part has a specific role in maintaining safe and stable energy storage operation.
