Several common solar cells types
2025-05-07
Solar cells (also known as solar chips or photovoltaic cells) are optoelectronic semiconductor devices that use sunlight to generate electricity directly. According to the crystal state, they can be divided into two categories: crystalline (including monocrystalline silicon and polycrystalline silicon) and amorphous thin film. At present, there are mainly silicon-based, compound thin film, organic material and other types on the market. Among them, the mature silicon solar cells are the most widely used and occupy a dominant position in the industry.

Several common types of solar cells
1. Silicon solar cells
Silicon-based solar cells include monocrystalline silicon, polycrystalline silicon thin film and amorphous silicon thin film. Monocrystalline silicon cells have become the most mature representative of technology with a laboratory maximum conversion efficiency of 24.7% (scale production can reach 18%). However, its high raw material cost restricts further promotion. In order to reduce costs, the industry has developed polycrystalline silicon thin film and amorphous silicon thin film as alternatives. Polycrystalline silicon thin film cells have outstanding performance in cost-effectiveness, with a laboratory efficiency of 18% (mass production 17%), and are expected to become the mainstream of the market. Although amorphous silicon thin film cells have advantages such as light weight and low cost, their practical application is restricted by material stability issues. If this technical bottleneck can be broken through, amorphous silicon cells will show great development potential.
2. Polycrystalline thin film cells
In this category, although cadmium sulfide and cadmium telluride thin film cells have better efficiency than amorphous silicon cells and lower cost than monocrystalline silicon cells, the toxicity of cadmium elements poses serious environmental risks. In contrast, gallium arsenide (GaAs) cells have a high conversion efficiency of 28% and excellent radiation resistance, but the high material cost limits their popularity. Copper indium selenide (CIS) thin film cells are regarded as an important development direction due to their good stability and cost advantages, but the scarcity of indium and selenium may restrict their long-term development.
3. Organic polymer battery
Organic polymer batteries represent an emerging research direction, and their advantages are material flexibility, simple process and low cost. Although their efficiency and life span are not comparable to traditional silicon batteries at present, as a technical route with disruptive potential, their development prospects deserve continued attention.
4. Nanocrystalline cells
This type of emerging battery technology shows significant cost advantages (only 1/5-1/10 of silicon cells), while maintaining a stable efficiency of more than 10% and a service life of more than 20 years. With the deepening of research and development, nanocrystalline cells are expected to be quickly commercialized.
5. Organic thin-film battery
Currently, the market share of organic thin-film batteries is less than 5%, but their unique material properties provide new possibilities for solar cell technology.
6. Dye-sensitized cells
Through the pigment-TiO2 composite system to achieve photoelectric conversion, this battery has a strong market competitiveness with a conversion efficiency of 12% and extremely low manufacturing cost.
7. Plastic battery
Using recyclable plastic film and roll-to-roll printing technology, plastic batteries have both environmental and cost advantages. It is expected that in the next 5-10 years, this technology will gradually mature and achieve large-scale application.
Overall, solar cell technology is showing a diversified development trend, and various technical routes have their own advantages in efficiency, cost and environmental protection, and jointly promote the innovation and development of the renewable energy field.

129kWh BESS Cabinet: Complete Guide to Capacity, Components, Applications and Sizing
One of the first questions homeowners ask when considering solar storage or backup power is: How many batteries to run a whole house? It sounds like a simple question, but the answer is different for every home. A battery system that works well for a small house with basic backup needs may not be enough for a larger property running air conditioning, electric heating, or an EV charger.
