MPPT Controller: How to Maintain Maximum Output Power for Photovoltaic Panels

In a photovoltaic power generation system, an MPPT controller is a common component. Its primary function is to regulate the voltage or current of the photovoltaic panel to maintain maximum output power.
Let's first look at an IV curve. The blue graph is the current-voltage curve, and the orange graph is the voltage-power curve. Pmax represents maximum power, and the voltage corresponding to the maximum power point is Vmpp, and the current is Impp.

As can be clearly seen from the graph, on the left side of the maximum power point, the voltage-power curve varies more than the current-voltage curve. In other words, as the voltage increases, the current decreases, but the power increases. Similarly, on the right side of the maximum power point, as the voltage increases, the power decreases.
During photovoltaic panel operation, the MPPT controller constantly monitors the voltage of the panel/string. When the panel/string voltage falls below the maximum power point voltage, the MPPT circuit adjusts the resistance in the circuit through its internal circuit structure, increasing the voltage of the panel/string and, in turn, the output power of the panel/string.
Conversely, when the module/string voltage exceeds the maximum power point voltage, the MPPT adjusts the resistance of the circuit through its internal circuit structure, reducing the module/string voltage and thereby increasing the module/string output power.
MPPT Operational Steps
- ① Detect the current module/string voltage and current and calculate its power as x.
- ② Increase the voltage by adjusting the resistance of the internal circuit and detect the increased module/string power as y.
- ③ Compare x with y.
- If x > y, the MPPT reduces the voltage, recalculates the power, and compares them.
- If x < y, the MPPT increases the voltage, recalculates the power, and compares them.
Simply put, the MPPT maintains the optimal module/string output power by comparing the power before and after voltage increases and decreases. The following control logic uses the voltage increase as an example.

MPPT continuously adjusts the voltage and compares it with the power at the previous moment to determine the optimal power for the current PV module/string.
