There are lithium battery powered products that still work perfectly well after several years. Remember that when the lithium battery reaches its end of life it will still need replacing with a new battery.
Taking into account that several factors can come into play in real life, especially with depth of discharge, "500 charge cycles" can only be a general reference to battery life. Generally speaking, the life of lithium battery is associated with the completed charge cycles rather than an actual number of charge completions on its own.
