Disadvantages and advantages of solar cells
2025-06-09
Solar cells, also known as solar chips or photovoltaic cells, are also called semiconductor solar cells. They are a type of photoelectric semiconductor sheet that uses sunlight to generate electricity directly. As long as it is exposed to light, it can output voltage and current. So what are the advantages and disadvantages of solar cells? Let's read with Bonada.

Advantages of solar photovoltaic power generation
1. High energy density
The energy density of solar lithium batteries is significantly higher than that of traditional lead-acid batteries, usually between 100 and 260Wh/kg, while lead-acid batteries are only 30 to 50Wh/kg. This means that lithium batteries can store more electricity at the same volume or weight, which is particularly suitable for solar energy application scenarios with limited space.
2. Low self-discharge rate
The self-discharge rate of lithium batteries is low, and the monthly self-discharge rate of high-quality products can be controlled below 2% to 3%. In contrast, the self-discharge rate of nickel-hydrogen batteries is as high as 20% to 30% per month. Low self-discharge rate helps lithium batteries maintain power during storage and reduce energy loss.
3. Long cycle life
Solar lithium batteries have a long cycle life, generally up to 1000 to 3000 charge and discharge cycles, far exceeding the 300 to 500 times of lead-acid batteries. Long cycle life reduces the frequency of battery replacement, reduces system maintenance costs and waste generation.
4. High charging efficiency
The charging efficiency of lithium batteries is usually above 90%, which can quickly absorb the electricity generated by solar panels and reduce energy loss during charging.
5. Wide operating temperature range
Lithium batteries can work normally in an environment of minus 20 degrees Celsius to 60 degrees Celsius, and are suitable for a variety of climatic conditions. However, too high or too low temperatures will still affect their performance.
6. Good environmental performance
Lithium batteries do not contain toxic heavy metals such as mercury, cadmium, lead, etc., and the production, use and waste treatment processes have little impact on the environment, which is in line with the concept of environmental protection.
Disadvantages of solar photovoltaic power generation:
1. Temperature sensitivity
Although lithium batteries have a wide applicable temperature range, their performance will be affected when they exceed the normal range, especially in low temperature environments, the battery capacity and discharge capacity will decrease.
2. safety risks
Lithium batteries are highly chemically active, and their processing, storage, and use require strict management. Long periods of non-use or improper charging may damage the battery and even cause safety hazards.
3. high cost
Compared with traditional energy storage batteries, lithium batteries are more expensive, mainly due to their high performance and advanced technology. However, with technological advances and increased production, costs are expected to gradually decrease.

129kWh BESS Cabinet: Complete Guide to Capacity, Components, Applications and Sizing
One of the first questions homeowners ask when considering solar storage or backup power is: How many batteries to run a whole house? It sounds like a simple question, but the answer is different for every home. A battery system that works well for a small house with basic backup needs may not be enough for a larger property running air conditioning, electric heating, or an EV charger.

A typical 129kWh BESS cabinet contains much more than battery cells. Inside the enclosure, multiple systems work together, including battery modules, Battery Management System (BMS), high-voltage protection units, Energy Management System (EMS), cooling equipment, fire protection devices, and communication components. Each part has a specific role in maintaining safe and stable energy storage operation.
