As a device that converts sunlight directly into electricity, solar cells are becoming increasingly relevant to our lives and industrial production, while efficiency is key to assessing the effectiveness of a solar cell. So what is solar cell efficiency?

Detailed explanation of solar cell efficiency
What is solar cell efficiency?
Solar cell efficiency is how a solar cell converts sunlight into electrical energy. A solar cell will convert solar solar radiation to electricity under sunlight conditions. The higher the efficiency of a solar cell means more electrical energy is produced under the same light intensity. Generally speaking, solar cell efficiency is calculated using the ratio of the electrical energy output from a solar cell to the light energy that the solar cell has been illuminated with when illuminated by the sun.
How is solar cell efficiency calculated?
Solar cell efficiency is a ratio that is called "PCE (Power Conversion Efficiency)". PCE must also be measured under standard test conditions (STC); at STC the temperature of the solar panel is 25 degrees Celsius, the illumination intensity is 1 kilowatt per square meter and the spectrum of the radiant energy is atmospheric mass (AM) of 1.5. A solar cell's PCE can be calculated using the following formula:
PCE = (output power of the cell / the light intensity) × 100%
PCE = (output power of the cell / the light intensity) × 100%
Factors affecting the performance of solar cells
- 1. Spectral range: Solar cells possess different impacts on light absorption at different wavelengths, thus efficiency depends on the spectral range.
- 2. Temperature: Efficiency decreases with increasing temperature, and in general, we can say that for every 1 degree Celsius increased in temperature of the solar cell, it will lose roughly 0.45% efficiency compared to if it were at its regular operating temperature.
- 3. Light intensity: The higher the intensity of light available, the better the efficiency of the solar cell. However, if the intensity is too much, there can then be a drop in efficiency from a high light intensity.
- 4. Materials and structure: The efficiency also depends on the materials and structures of the solar cell, The currently available solar cells are thin film solar cells, monocrystalline silicon solar cells and polycrystalline silicon solar cells.
Solar cell efficiency is a key performance indicator of solar cells, and from an ordinary consumer's perspective, when purchasing solar cells, efficiency is an important consideration. Understanding the definition, method of calculation and the factors that contribute to solar cell efficiency, will enable us to more effective select and utilize solar cells.

129kWh BESS Cabinet: Complete Guide to Capacity, Components, Applications and Sizing
One of the first questions homeowners ask when considering solar storage or backup power is: How many batteries to run a whole house? It sounds like a simple question, but the answer is different for every home. A battery system that works well for a small house with basic backup needs may not be enough for a larger property running air conditioning, electric heating, or an EV charger.
